What is Chronic insomnia?
Chronic insomnia is a form of sleep disorder if it persists for at least 3 nights per week for at least 3 months. It is characterised by difficulties with falling asleep easily or with staying asleep without waking frequently.
This can increase feelings of tiredness, or affect mood and cognitive functions such as memory and concentration during the daytime which can affect work, study or other activities. These symptoms are often the reason individuals seek treatment for chronic insomnia.
Although there are no clear causes, contributing factors can include stress, anxiety, depression, and underlying chronic conditions such as pain.
